About the Suzuki Jimny 5-door ALLGRIP PRO 4x4 System
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door uses a traditional, part-time four-wheel-drive system called ALLGRIP PRO.
This system connects the engine to all four wheels manually. It is designed for tough off-road driving rather than everyday paved roads.
Here is how the system works.
The Main Parts
- Transfer Case: An extra gear box that splits engine power between the front and back wheels.
- Mechanical Lever: A physical stick on the floor that the driver pushes to change drive modes.
- Brake LSD: A smart computer system that brakes spinning wheels to send power to wheels with grip.
The Drive Modes
You can shift the 4x4 lever into three different modes:
- 2H (Two-Wheel Drive High): Power goes only to the rear wheels. Use this for normal driving on dry, smooth roads. It saves fuel.
- 4H (Four-Wheel Drive High): Power splits evenly between front and rear wheels. Use this for fast driving on slippery surfaces like mud, sand, or snow.
- 4L (Four-Wheel Drive Low): Power splits evenly, but the gears multiply the engine's turning force. Use this for steep hills, deep mud, and rocky trails.
How It Handles Slippery Ground
The Jimny has open differentials on the axles. If one wheel lifts into the air, it will spin freely, and the car can get stuck. To fix this, the Jimny uses Brake LSD (Limited Slip Differential) Traction Control:
- Sensors feel a wheel spinning with no grip.
- The car automatically clamps the brake on that spinning wheel.
- This forces the engine power to go across the axle to the opposite wheel that still touches the ground.
When Not to Use It
You must never use 4H or 4L on dry asphalt. The front and rear wheels are locked together by the transfer case. When turning on dry roads, the wheels need to spin at different speeds. If they cannot slip, the drivetrain will bind up. This can break expensive parts.
